He shared the award with American <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/physics\/2018\/ashkin\/facts\/\">Arthur Ashkin<\/a> and Canadian <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donna_Strickland\">Donna Strickland<\/a>.While working at the University of Rochester, he and his student, Donna Strickland, developed CPA (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eli-beams.eu\/research\/lasers\/\">Chirped Pulse Amplification<\/a>) technology. Their joint discovery made it possible to develop laser systems with very high performance and their completely new applications in industry or medicine &#8211; femtosecond laser pulses were used, for example, in eye surgery.
