Around one third of Africa\u2019s leaders attended the conference on 20th January. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/middle-east-and-africa\/2020\/01\/25\/boris-johnson-woos-africa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Economis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t assesses Prime Minister Boris Johnson\u2019s attempts to woo leaders, telling them \u2018Africa is the future\u2019. As the influence of the Department for International Development has grown, that of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has shrunk, as detailed in BFPG report \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bfpg.co.uk\/2019\/06\/running-out-of-credit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running out of Credit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019, cited in the article. Africa has thus become isolated as a \u2018development issue\u2019, with Britain\u2019s diplomatic footprint in Africa much smaller than what it was.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The announcement at the end of last year that the death toll in the war in Yemen now exceeds 100,000 went largely unnoticed in the UK amidst the aftermath of the election. Anna Stavianakis, writing for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2020\/jan\/24\/britain-must-be-held-to-account-for-its-role-in-the-war-in-yemen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explores Britain\u2019s role in the conflict, in supplying military and diplomatic support to the Saudi-led coalition responsible for the highest number of reported civilian fatalities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Libya\u2019s calamitous descent into unending conflict has led successive British governments to wash their hands of the country. Con Coughlin, writing in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2020\/01\/22\/britain-has-duty-end-libyas-bitter-civil-war\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Telegraph<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, argues that Britain has a \u2018deep moral obligation\u2019 to try and end the fighting, and \u2018bring some semblance of stability to Libya after all the turmoil of the past decade.\u2019 However, the gulf left by countries \u2018washing their hands\u2019 of the conflict has left other powers, such as Russia, Turkey and Germany, to call the shots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Brexit, the United Kingdom will be looking beyond our traditional alliances for new friends in emerging markets. Anna Grugel Smith asks \u2018what cards can the UK play in Latin America?\u2019 in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendemocracy.net\/en\/democraciaabierta\/qu%C3%A9-cartas-si-alguna-puede-jugar-el-reino-unido-en-am%C3%A9rica-latina-despu%C3%A9s-de-brexit-en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OpenDemocracy <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this week. Smith notes that despite a fairly strong relationship between the EU and Latin America, Britain\u2019s independent relationship with the region has certainly been dwindling since the early 20th century. Not only is there very little trade between the UK and the region but other than the dispute over the Falkland Islands Britain plays a very limited role in regard to political and strategic policy within Latin America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More news from the UK-Africa Investment Summit, a major point in the last week in foreign policy, where Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Britain will put \u201cpeople before passports\u201d as he pledged a fairer migration system at an investment summit for African leaders in London Monday. Henry Ridgwell, writing in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/africa\/britain-summit-woos-africa-visa-overhaul-many-leaders-absent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VOA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, noted that Britain really turned on the charm offensive around the summit, with the Royal family a key prong. Host Prince William told his guests that \u201cThe African continent holds a very special place in my heart.\u201d Ridgwell asks: \u201cBut do African nations embrace the vision of a &#8220;global Britain&#8221;?
