Miranda Grell explores for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/jamaica-deportation-flight-uk-home-office-government-black-british-citizens-a9328616.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Independent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the effect this scandal will have on black Britons\u2019 trust in the government. The lessons learned from the Windrush scandal have not been learned by government, Grell says. \u2018It appears that &#8211; as many black Britons feared &#8211; the government clearly does not consider people of Caribbean heritage part of the \u2018Global Britain\u2019 equation\u2019, she writes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>COP26<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week also saw the launch of the government\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bfpg.co.uk\/2020\/02\/whats-on-the-agenda-for-cop26\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COP26<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> preparations. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/climate-change-britain-politics\/britain-faces-tough-diplomatic-test-in-leading-global-climate-action-idUKL8N2AB6TT\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> examine the diplomatic tests coming the UK\u2019s way this year. The November conference will take place just days before the US Presidential elections that could return President Donald Trump to office, thus securing the US\u2019s exit from the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. The UK must shore up its diplomatic strengths in preparation for this eventuality, working behind the scenes to persuade emitters like China and India that action on climate change is necessary, whether or not the US does.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Digital Threats<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahead of this year\u2019s Security and Defence review, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2020\/02\/09\/britain-should-focus-russian-cyber-attacks-fake-news-major-conflict\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Telegraph<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explores the growing threat of Russian cyber attacks and fake news, which is overtaking major conflict as a threat to the UK. RUSI\u2019s Professor Malcolm Chalmers argues that new policy instruments are necessary to combat the growth of digital threats in light of the return to state-based competition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;Davos for Defence&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other defence news, the so-called \u2018Davos for defence\u2019 took place this week, which Britain was notably absent from, in terms of senior minister presence. The impact this mis-step will have on the government\u2019s Global Britain agenda is explored in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7b0ae7f4-4d9b-11ea-95a0-43d18ec715f5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The UK\u2019s position as one of Europe\u2019s biggest defence powers has usually meant a sizable delegation is sent to the conference. Given this year\u2019s conference taking place just weeks after the UK left the EU, the government risks leaving Global Britain to be merely an empty slogan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>AKK Quits<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In big news for future UK-Europe relations, Angel Merkel\u2019s heir apparent, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, quit as leader of the Christian Democrats on Monday. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/merkel-job-germanys-future-up-for-grabs-annegret-kramp-karrenbauer\/?utm_source=POLITICO.EU&amp;utm_campaign=ad4ff6d8cb-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_02_14_05_59&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_10959edeb5-ad4ff6d8cb-190407813\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">POLITICO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looks at who Germany\u2019s next leader is likely to be. Health Minister Jens Spahn, and Friedrich Merz, a prominent former MP and foe of Merkel, are the two most likely choices.
