{"id":21249,"date":"2023-11-14T23:00:17","date_gmt":"2023-11-14T23:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bfpg.co.uk\/?p=21249"},"modified":"2024-04-22T15:55:20","modified_gmt":"2024-04-22T15:55:20","slug":"sanctions-and-patient-diplomacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bfpg.co.uk\/2023\/11\/sanctions-and-patient-diplomacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Sanctions and Patient Diplomacy: Having It All or Just a Diversion?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The British Foreign Policy Group\u2019s latest report, <\/span><b>Sanctions and Patient Diplomacy: Having it All or Just a Diversion?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, finds that sanctions against Russia have led to a significant degree of trade diversion, are contributing to a splintering of previously globalised trade routes, into Eastern- and Western-dominated routes, and are inhibiting the UK\u2019s broader security and prosperity objectives by impacting the \u2018patient diplomacy\u2019 agenda of engagement with \u2018middle-ground\u2019 powers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report explores how s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anctions on Russia have not sufficiently constrained Moscow, which continues to gain revenues from trade in sanctioned goods. Moreover, s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anctions and trade controls have enabled Russia to deepen economic relations with a number of countries, many of which are key &#8216;middle ground&#8221; powers, and some of which are nations\u00a0explicitly hostile to the West, such as Iran and North Korea. Though the latter axis remains a significant threat to UK security, the report finds that the UK should be careful not to undermine its relationships with the &#8216;middle ground&#8217; powers by maintaining a narrow focus on the sanctions issue, at the expense of broader strategic collaboration<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bfpg.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/BFPG-Sanctions-and-Patient-Diplomacy-Nov-2023-3.pdf\"><strong>READ THE FULL REPORT<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>David Landsman, Senior Adviser at the British Foreign Policy Group, says:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The argument for imposing sanctions is in some cases overwhelming. But making sanctions watertight can be far easier said than done, and have unforeseen impacts on relationships with countries which are increasingly important for our foreign policy.
