{"id":21963,"date":"2025-05-08T00:30:50","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T00:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bfpg.co.uk\/?p=21963"},"modified":"2025-10-22T09:30:53","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T09:30:53","slug":"strengthening-uk-soft-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bfpg.co.uk\/2025\/05\/strengthening-uk-soft-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Strengthening UK Soft Power: Strategic Recommendations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uksoftpowergroup.com\/\">UK Soft Power Group<\/a> (UKSPG), which BFPG proudly co-convenes alongside the British Council, has released its latest report, <\/span><b>\u2018Strengthening UK Soft Power: Strategic Recommendations\u2019, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the role of soft power in achieving the UK\u2019s international ambitions in a turbulent geopolitical and international environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the UK Soft Power Group first introduced a strategic framework for UK soft power in 2023, the international landscape has grown increasingly volatile. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This challenging geopolitical context has placed hard power at the forefront of global politics &#8211; and the UK\u2019s approach to it &#8211; in recent years. While <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hard power is clearly critical, soft power &#8211; that is, the ability to achieve a goal through attraction &#8211; is essential for creating the conditions for strengthening the UK\u2019s alliances, diplomatic influence, and international credibility.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result of collaboration between 20 of the UK\u2019s biggest soft power assets, the report explores the significant benefits that the UK reaps from its soft power, from supporting international peace and security, to boosting economic growth and strengthening the UK\u2019s relationship with Europe. Harnessing these benefits will be critical in order for the UK to meet the challenges of an increasingly turbulent geopolitical environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bfpg.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/UK-Soft-Power-Group-Strategic-Recommendations-Full-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FULL REPORT<\/a><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bfpg.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Executive-Summary-UK-Soft-Power-Group-Strategic-Recommendations.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SUMMARY REPORT<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><b>Report Snapshot:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The UK is the third most attractive nation brand and possesses a wealth of soft power, from its rich cultural history and language to its higher education system, sporting prowess, financial services, and media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; This soft power strength plays a crucial role in maintaining the UK\u2019s international position. From tackling misinformation in Ukraine to strengthening relationships with Europe and educating the public on climate change, soft power has a critical role to play in achieving all of the UK\u2019s top foreign policy priorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; However, the UK\u2019s soft power strength is not guaranteed. With China and Russia investing heavily in soft power, particularly in increasingly geostrategically important regions such as Africa, and the United States retreating from its traditional position on the world stage, the UK must strategically invest in its soft power in order to maintain its position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The report therefore identifies key opportunities for the Government and soft power assets to work collaboratively together in support of the UK\u2019s international ambitions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Report Recommendations:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Establish a structured channel for engagement between Government and the wider soft power sector, including the UK Soft Power Group, alongside the Soft Power Council.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Provide clarity on the Government\u2019s strategic priorities and long-term planning horizons and develop predictable funding mechanisms for UK soft power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Enhance connectivity between soft power assets and overseas Posts by better leveraging existing on-the-ground expertise, mechanisms and institutions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Develop a \u2018digital gateway to the UK\u2019, a soft power digital platform where UK soft power assets can share resources, information on upcoming events and collaborate on projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Develop provision for Whitehall Departments and devolved administrations to collectively address strategic issues and find practical solutions to opportunities and challenges in the soft power space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>About the UKSPG: <\/b>Co-convened by BFPG and the British Council, t<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he UK Soft Power Group (UKSPG) is the leading non-governmental organisation collectively representing soft power organisations in the UK.
